Active in Wilmington: Building Community through Social Action

Providing community for non-believers through secular social functions and neighborhood-centered social action opportunities is a key mandate of Humanists and Freethinkers of Cape Fear.

“HFCF social activities provide secular people with the sense of community and belonging typically associated with having a ‘church family,'” says Amber Taggert, HFCF Social Action committee member. “We try to build a safe inclusive atmosphere for secular persons in the Wilmington NC area.”

The HFCF Social Action Committee has filled the early 2016 calendar with a variety of opportunities for members to get involved and give back to the community:

March 29 – 5th Tues Mother Hubbard Food Pantry
April TBD – First Lego League (5th grade Freeman Elementary School)
April 8-10 – Azalea Festival
April 23, Saturday – Wilmington Earth Day Festival
April 23, Saturday – Work on Wilmington
May 5 – Day of Reason day sponsorship on WHQR
May 31 – 5th Tues Mother Hubbard Food Pantry
June tba – Secular Coalition North Carolina Lobby Day
August 30 – 5th Tues Mother Hubbard Food Pantry
Nov. 29 – 5th Tues Mother Hubbard Food Pantry

“We are very active in the community – with various volunteer activities – not just in accordance with a Humanist lifestance, but also to do our part in reversing the stigmas associated with being secular,” Amber points out. “Community outreach and public education projects allow us to demonstrate that people can still be good, without god.”
